Arcimboldo’s Serious Jokes and the Origins of Still-Life Painting

On the basis of recent discoveries this lecture offers an interpretation of some of the paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593), who in 2007 and 2008 will be the subject of a major exhibition in Paris and Vienna. Arcimboldo's relation to art theory, literary theory, humanism, and natural history are treated in view of the creation of his invertible heads and their place in the development of still-life painting.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Da Costa Kaufmann
Thomas Da Costa Kaufmann is Marquand Professor of Art and Archaeology at
Princeton University. He is the author of numerous articles and books:
in 2004 Professor Kaufmann published three books, Toward a Geography of
Art; The Eloquent Artist. Essays on Art, Art Theory and Architecture,
Sixteenth to Nineteenth Century. London, Pindar Press; Central European
Drawings in the Crocker Museum of Art, in 2005, Painterly Enlightenment.
Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724-1796); and together with Elizabeth Pilliod
he edited Time and Place. The Geohistory of Art. During the academic
year 2005-2006 he also published thirteen articles, book chapters, and
book reviews on topics ranging from cultural transfer in Peru to
Netherlandish art in Poland.
