Jeffrey Chipps Smith, Austin (Texas)

Dürer and Sculpture; Dürer as Sculpture

Vortrag am 20. Juni 2007, 18 Uhr c.t.
Vortragsraum 242, II. OG, Meiserstraße 10

Other than the superb 1981 Frankfurt exhibition entitled “Dürers Verwandlung in der Skulptur zwischen Renaissance und Barock”, the artist's varied relationships with the medium of sculpture have rarely been addressed. The lecture will consider six topics: Dürer and the aesthetics of sculpture; his writings on sculpture; his designs for sculptors and goldsmiths; his prints as models for sculptors; Dürer(?) as sculptor; and Dürer as sculpture. The latter will include examples from the 16th to 20 centuries.

Prof. Dr. Jeffrey Chipps Smith
is Professor of Art History and holds the Kay Fortson Chair in European Art at the University of Texas in Austin. He has taught there since receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1979. Smith has written extensively about German and Netherlandish art including books on Nuremberg, German Renaissance sculpture, Jesuits, the Northern Renaissance, and late fifteenth century goldsmith work. He is currently completing a monograph on Albrecht Dürer for Phaidon Press of London. Smith served as editor of the Renaissance Quarterly (2003-06). He held fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the Zentralinstitut in 1985-86, summer 1988, and 1992-93.
