Annika Hossain // The United States' participation at the Venice Biennale (1895-present)

Projektbeschreibung

The research project analyzes the participation of the United States of America at the Venice Biennale from 1895 to today. The history of the Venice Biennale stands paradigmatically for the development of the art system in the 20th century. Thus the cultural representation of the US at the Biennale is interrelated with social, political and economical processes. The ecceptional role of the US in 20th century world politics can parallely be monitored in the cultural activities of the country as exemplified in the participation at the Venice Biennale. The thesis refers to actual cultural theories with a focus on postcolonial theory.
