Philip II and Italian Sculpture: a Troubled Marriage?
Philip II’s contemporary historiographers have found it difficult to explain the attitude of the King of Spain towards secular sculpture. My paper will reconsider the portrait statues by Leone and Pompeo Leoni now in the Prado Museum (1549-1572), as well as smaller objects of art made by Italian artists at the court of Madrid from 1559. This double focus will help us to understand Philip II’s selective reception of Italian sculptural genres.

Ausgezeichnet mit Stipendien und Preisen folgender Institutionen: Warburg Institute, London; Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris; Corpus Christi College, Oxford; Ministère de la Communauté Française, Brüssel; Società Numismatica Italiana, Mailand. Unterrichtete an der Universidad Internacional de Andalucia in Sevilla und der Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti di Milano und ist derzeit wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Kunstgeschichte der LMU.
