Visible Speech: Picturing Scripture in the Prayer Book of Ursula Begerin and the Medieval Tradition of Word Illustration
The Prayer Book of Ursula Begerin (Bern, Burgerbibliothek Cod. 801) is the most elaborately illustrated German prayer book of the Middle Ages. Originally conceived in Strasbourg ca. 1400 as a pure picture book, it was transformed into a prayer book by the addition of texts in the later 15th century. Prof. Hamburger's lecture will focus on one of the most distinctive features of the original picture book's extraordinarily comprehensive Christological cycle, its focus of the illustration of Christ's speech acts, in relationship to the medieval tradition of word illustration.
