SUMMARY:Vortrag // Ulinka Rublack: Colonial Dürer: Cloth\, Sugar and Aztec Treasures
DTSTART:20260513T161500Z
DTEND:20260513T171500Z
DESCRIPTION:In 1520\, the artist Albrecht Dürer travelled from Nuremb
erg to Antwerp. This lecture argues that his diary tells us about the
function of art and culture in an age of new Atlantic colonial commerc
 e. This means to inscribe Dürer into a new narrative of the German At
lantic´s involvement with colonialism and more broadly to show how ar
t functioned as one important media of building new and transnational
economic and political networks among rulers\, aristocrats\, officials
\, humanist scholars\, financiers and merchants. Dürer´s commentary
on Aztec artefacts needs to be placed in this colonial context.
