SUMMARY:Workshop // James A. van Dyke: Representing Shell: Modernism\, Petroculture\, and Politics in Interwar Germany
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, art historian James A. van Dyke (Univer
sity of Missouri) will discuss the poetics and politics of print adver
tisements for Shell lubricating oils and gasoline circulated in German
y between 1930 and 1933\, assessing how the company responded to socia
 l transformation\, economic crisis\, political polarization\, and the
explosive success of radical nationalism. This work is part of a proje
ct that surveys the rapidly expanding visual culture of automobility b
etween the world wars. Employing the theoretical foundations of the so
cial history of art and contemporary ecocriticism\, this project situa
tes the aesthetics of petroculture in the context of Weimar politics a
 nd visual culture.
