Ausgezeichnet wird eine Forschungsarbeit (Dissertation, Masterarbeit, Publikation), deren Abschluss nicht länger als drei Jahre zurückliegt. Der Preis wird an eine/n graduierte/n Kunsthistorikerin oder Kunsthistoriker vergeben (die Promotion sollte nicht länger als fünf Jahre zurückliegen) und besteht aus einem dreimonatigen Forschungsstipendium am Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte. Während des Aufenthalts wird ein neues Thema (das nicht mit der eingereichten Forschungsarbeit in Zusammenhang steht) bearbeitet und in einem Vortrag am ZI vorgestellt. Erwartet werden Präsenz vor Ort und Partizipation an den Aktivitäten des ZI. Das Stipendium ist mit insgesamt 7.000 € dotiert. Über die Vergabe entscheidet eine unabhängige Fachkommission. Der Antritt des Stipendiums kann nach Absprache individuell gewählt werden, sollte jedoch innerhalb eines Jahres nach der Preisvergabe erfolgen.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS // WILLIBALD SAUERLÄNDER AWARD 2026

The Willibald Sauerländer Award honours and supports early career research in the history of art history. The prize, funded by CONIVNCTA FLORESCIT Friends of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, honours the memory of Willibald Sauerländer (1924–2018), from 1970 to 1989 director of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte and an honorary professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich.

Consideration will be given to a Ph.D. dissertation, M.A. thesis, or publication completed within the last three years. Applicants should have been graduated within the last five years. The winning candidate, chosen by an independent committee of scholars, will receive € 7,000, and is expected to spend three months conducting research at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich. During the stay, a new topic (unrelated to the submitted research paper) should be worked on and presented in a workshop at the ZI. On-site attendance and participation in ZI activities are expected.
