The online journal was launched in April 2010 by the member institutes of RIHA, the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art, with the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) being responsible for the project management.

The RIHA Journal is a peer-reviewed and Open Access e-journal devoted to the full range of the history of art and visual culture. It especially welcomes papers on topics relevant from a supra-local perspective, articles that explore artistic interconnections or cultural exchanges, or engage with important theoretical questions that are apt to animate the discipline. As a collective endeavor, the RIHA Journal seeks to share knowledge and materials issued by scholars of all nationalities, and by doing so, to make a significant contribution to dissolving the boundaries between scholarly communities.

The RIHA Journal publishes articles in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. With regard to manuscripts written in another language, RIHA Journal encourages parallel publications in both the original language and in translation (e.g., Polish-English). As a genuine e-journal, RIHA Journal publishes articles continuously and welcomes submissions throughout the year, both from members of the RIHA institutes and from any other researchers in the history of art.

The RIHA Journal has a decentralized editorial structure: In its country or region, the respective member institute of the RIHA association acts as “Local Editor”, who obtains the peer reviews and edits the manuscripts. The Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte is the point of contact for authors working in Germany or for topics relating to German art history. In addition, the Zentralinstitut is home to the journal's Managing Editor, who coordinates all activities and finalizes the editorial processes.

All RIHA Journal articles are catalogued by kubikat. In addition, RIHA Journal is included in the following citation databases: Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Scopus, ERIH plus - The European Reference Index for the Humanities and the Social Sciences and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Long-term archiving is provided by the German National Library (DNB).

RIHA Journal is currently co-funded by the RIHA association and the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich. Initial funding was provided by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Der Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, BKM). The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) generously awarded RIHA Journal grants for its development between 2013 and 2016.
