Olivier Bonfait is professor of history of modern art (XVI-XVIII centuries) at the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon) and the Ecole du Louvre (Paris). After a doctoral research on painting and society in Bologna, (Les tableaux et les pinceaux, Rome, 2000), he became Associate Professor at the Sorbonne, then Head of the Department of  history of art at the Villa Medici, scientific adviser at INHA, and since 2007 professor at the University. He has realized many exhibitions (Roma 1630, Il Trionfo del penello, Rome, 1994; Le Dieu caché. Les peintres du Grand Siècle et la vision de Dieu, Rome, 2000; Maestà di Roma. Les artistes français et Rome de Ingres à Degas, Rome, 2003; Le peuple de Rome, Ajaccio, 2013) and founded two journals (Studiolo, Perspective). He is currently completing a critical edition of Félibien's Entretiens.
His research interests revolve around the relationship between arts and societies, the history of art history, and visual culture in modern times. He recently published: Après Caravage. Une peinture caravagesque? (2012) and Poussin et Louis XIV. Peinture et monarchie dans la France du Grand Siècle (2015).
He is currently working on the notion of reality in visual arts in Europe from 1580 to 1650 and to a history of big size paintings in western art.

In Verbindung mit der Panofsky-Professur schreibt das ZI jährlich Panofsky-Fellowships aus. Diesjährige Trägerin des Stipendiums ist Ruth Ezra, die sich ab Mai für drei Monate am ZI aufhalten wird. Ihr Projekt befasst sich mit dem Thema „‚Sculptural‘ Practices in Two Dimensions, 1500-1530“.
