Graphic Production: Art Zines in Context

Studientag Art Zines in Context

[for english version please scroll down]

Toujours de sortie: Pascal Doury, Bruno Richard: artistes maudits?

‘You had to pretend to be a moron’: Raymond Pettibon as Reader and Punk
Tilo Reifenstein, Manchester Metropolitan University

Art-historical tracings of Raymond Pettibon’s graphic oeuvre (drawings on loose sheets, wall-drawings, collages, and zines) commonly arrive at the work’s putative roots in American comic strip and Californian punk culture. Often this historical narrative is used to contrast it with the work’s literariness in order to establish an apparent clash of high- and lowbrow cultures. Pettibon however, regularly rejects any deep affiliation with punk and any particular interest in comics. Rather, punk and comics, like Henry James and Charles Manson, or surfing and St Augustine are interwoven strands of the textile that is constitutive of the artist’s work. That Pettibon is a vociferous literary reader is also evident in his zines, which consistently play with the very notion of what it means to read or make a zine. This illustrated paper seeks to disturb the utility of the labels that limit Pettibon to being a reader or a punk.

What’s Wrong With Us? Punk 101 – towards greater utilization of zines in an institutional collection of artists' publications
Anne-Dorothee Boehme, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Do zines make a (political) difference? For our users, they do. I will describe the curricular relevance of these publications within the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s library special collections, our public programming endeavors, and my acquisition efforts as they pertain to contemporary ‘Grrrl Zine’ culture. These works don’t function as an attempt to gain entry to, or ultimately partake in, an art market which, to this day, remains unbalanced in regards to ethnic and gender diversity. Rather I see them as an autonomous, wilful, self-affirming act of dissent that defies hierarchies and explores alternative, often collaborative, models of (ex)change. Zines, grounded as they are in a DIY and gift economy, clearly deviate from dominant, capitalist modes of culture production, and engage distinct, often local subsets of the art community. Even more so than artists’ books, they exemplify how permeable the boundaries are of what we commonly designate as 'artistic practice' and how artists-as-citizens can participate in a political dialogue beyond traditional forms of activism. My goal as an institutional collector is to foster greater visibility and awareness of communities and artists that generate zines, and to broaden our users' understanding of the reasons behind this perceived disengagement from established art market norms.

International Study Day
Graphic Production: Art Zines in Context

The title of this study day alludes to a book published in 1983 by Éditions Autrement, Paris (Graphic production 73-83: 1000 dessins sauvages), an international overview of then recent art zines from the collection of French artist Bruno Richard. The conference is organized on the occasion of an exhibition presenting a selection from the Zentralinstitut’s collection of French figurative Graphzines and a thematically related installation by Stéphane Blanquet at the Museum Fürstenfeldbruck near Munich. Beyond the French graphic scene, speakers will deal with art zines in an international context, the typology of artist publications, as well as the practice of collecting, communicating, but also creating art zines.
