For another approach of art history – publishing / collecting / preserving / writing / diffusing

Im Rahmen des Projekts "Studienzentrums zur Moderne - Bibliothek Herzog Franz von Bayern am Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte"

The lecture will focus on the activities of the "archive for small press & communication" founded in 1974. Its aim was to collect, preserve and present the patrimony built up by people, active from inside and not from outside the art scene, to be the witness and memory of actions independent of all powers. Artists' publications were a unique medium in this period of cultural and social evolution. Still they are the most radical way to approach art.

Guy Schraenen
is the founder of Galerie Kontakt, Antwerp, of the publishing house Guy Schraenen éditeur, Antwerp/Paris, of the Archive for Small Press & Communication (A.S.P.C.), Antwerp and the creator of the Museum within a Museum in the Museum Weserburg, Bremen. He is an internationally-known curator, publisher, advisor, a.o. in the Museu Serralves, Porto, the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid and the Museum Weserburg, Bremen. His many activities are focused mainly on the collection, preservation, display and communication of artists' publications from various international avant-garde and independent art movements between the late 1950s and the 1980s. Recently the Research Centre of Artists Publications in Bremen published the "Collected Writings Guy Schraenen. Essays, Statements, Interviews 1974-2013" which gives access to all the texts he published over four decades.
