Collecting for the Monarchy: the Tessin Family and the Arts in Eighteenth-Century Sweden

The three generations of the Tessin dynasty dominated Swedish architecture and patronage in the period ca 1660–1750. The son of the King’s architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, Nicodemus the Younger designed a new palace for Stockholm and rose to the highest positions of the realm. As Swedish Ambassador to France, Carl Gustaf Tessin amassed one of Europe’s most important collections of contemporary painting and master drawings, now forming the nucleus of the holdings of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.

Dr. Martin Olin
Senior Lecturer at Gotland University in Sweden, where he teaches within a three-year training programme focusing on the history and conservation of interiors. Between 1999 and 2002, he worked at the National Museum, Stockholm, curating a catalogue of architectural drawings for the research project Nicodemus Tessin the Younger: Sources, Works, Collections. His current research interests include 17th-century French and Italian drawings within the area of applied arts.
