Fischer von Erlach’s First Project for the "Entwurff einer historischen Architectur". New Finds and New Problems
Fischer von Erlach’s "Entwurff einer historischen Architectur" is fundamentally important as the first book to present a coherent and structured vision of the history of architecture, derived both from antiquarian scholarship and his own work as an architect. Despite this significance, we know very little about the actual development of the work. A newly-discovered early example presented to the Tessin family of architects and collectors in Stockholm in 1720 reveals much about the process of the book’s preparation. It also raises further questions about Fischer’s first intentions, and suggests that he had initially hoped to publish the work about a decade before its actual appearance in 1721.
