Ashley West’s talk on “Hans Burgkmair and Konrad Peutinger: Reevaluating the Artist-Humanist Relationship” looks at the mutual exchange of these two figures on their own terms, not in the shadow of the other famous duo of Albrecht Dürer and Willibald Pirckheimer. Rather than considering Burgkmair to be an ‘intellectual artist,’ a tagline often conferred on Dürer for his close association with Pirckheimer, West examines Burgkmair’s particular area of expertise and how it was refined through Peutinger’s commissions and supervision. Looking, for example, at Burgkmair’s visual and stylistic discernment, and his privileging of material artifacts, she asks: in what moments and capacity did their careers and interests intersect? What role did Burgkmair and Peutinger play in each other’s professional lives? And what might we learn about the German Renaissance through their example and privileging of objects and things?
