The Gender Politics of Sentiment in Post-Revolutionary French Art

Vortragsreihe „Aspekte französischer Kunst, 1650-1800“

Rejected as an expression of moral weakness during the height of Jacobin rule (1793-1794) and systematically associated with feminine sensibility, the appeal to sentiment acquired a new prestige in reinforcing social and political cohesion during the years of republican consolidation that followed. In the arts, iconography and style were put at the service of this strategy, both in the realm of subjects from ancient history and in scenes of modern life. Jacques-Louis David’s Intervention of the Sabine Women (1799) and Hilaire Ledru’s Indigence and Honour (1804) exemplify the gendered politics involved. The return of Jean-Baptiste Greuze to the Salon in the years before his death (1805) was a further signal of this attempt to conciliate the classical and romantic aspirations of the period.
