The Global Currents of Paper
This paper will trace a history of the early modern world through paper-making technology and its routes. As the literature surrounding early-modern paper-making makes clear, the surface of paper embodies landscape, process, flax, linen and rushing water. Through attending to the different local environments around the world in which early-modern paper was manufactured it may be see how it was never merely a support for drawing, print or books. Paper as a ground with its particular qualities of felt, hairs, fiber and water was a product of its local environment and carried these micro-sites of felt, fiber and water into distant worlds.
