Trouble in the Database: Precision and Ambiguity in Historical Sources for Modern German Architecture

This workshop will offer a presentation and discussion of working with precision and ambiguity in historical sources. We will begin with an overview of the problem by looking at the case study of analyzing spatial information derived from the Deutsche Bauzeitung (1914-24) and the problems and possibilities for visualization and analysis that such a source allows. The workshop will then move to open discussion of strategies and possibilities for working with ambiguity using digital methods.

Prof. Dr. Paul B. Jaskot, Durham

Paul B. Jaskot is Professor of Art History and the Director of the Wired Lab for Digital Art History & Visual Culture at Duke University. His scholarship focuses on the political history of modern art and architecture, with a specific interest in the cultural policy of Nazi Germany as well as its postwar impact. He is author of, among other works, The Nazi Perpetrator: Postwar German Art and the Politics of the Right (2012) as well as co-editor of New Approaches to an Integrated History of the Holocaust: Social History, Representation, Theory (forthcoming 2018). In addition, he has contributed significantly to the art historical engagement with digital humanities, above all in his collaborative work with historical geographer Anne Kelly Knowles including their two co-authored chapters in the book Geographies of the Holocaust (2014). Jaskot was President of the College Art Association (2008-2010) as well as Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the Center for Advanced Study of the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC; 2014-2016).
