Ornamenta Sacerdotum: Figurative Chasubles in Central Europe, 1370-1520

This thesis project, Ornamenta Sacerdotum, is concerned with analyzing changes in vesting practice in late-medieval and early modern Bohemia, as vestments came to express different, sometimes competing, understandings of the priesthood and the church. In the course of doing this, Juliette Calvarin is studying both a wide variety of textual sources and, where possible, actual surviving vestments and vestment fragments. The research covers three historical periods: the last decades of the fourteenth century, after the outbreak of the Great Schism, when the Urbanist archbishop of Prague utilized changes to the liturgy and visionary experiences involving the liturgy, to further a hierarchical and mystical vision of the church; the fifteenth century, when lower-ranking preachers, trying to create a new and horizontally-structured church in pursuit of the same moral goals, experimented with drastically reducing vesture; and the period of re-catholization, when a newly-dominant church sought to reconnect to pre-Hussite Bohemia in many ways, including through recycling of precious vestments, fashioning a new national identity for the age of confessionalism. Juliette Calvarin makes no attempt to be exhaustive, but in each case select a particularly revealing case study while discussing broader developments.
