Erwin Panofsky’s name is associated especially with theorizations and demonstrations of iconological method, yet his greater effort, as he put it, was to combine the iconographic with the ‘stylistic’ approach. In 1942 he gave a series of lectures at the University of Virginia focused on the development of Gothic architecture, sculpture, and painting which he intended to publish in a ‘little book’ entitled The Gothic Style. An unpublished prospectus that he prepared for this never written study serves as the starting point for a consideration of his characterizations of the Gothic and the place of the Gothic in his discussions of style.

Trained in the Warburg tradition, she conducts research in the areas of medieval art and disciplinary historiography. Now completing a book, Warburg Circles, 1929–1964, she has published numerous essays on art historical writing, including work by Warburg, Goldschmidt, Wind, Seznec, Janson, and Heckscher. Her research has been supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants to the Getty, the British School at Rome, the American Academy in Berlin, and CASVA.
