The Entwurff einer historischen Architectur is a well-known text, traditionally considered a cornerstone of modern architectural historiography. In their book (and in this seminar) the authors aim to discuss a very different interpretation, based on a new analysis of the iconographic sources of the plates by Fischer von Erlach. In this light, the Entwurff appears to have been inspired by the purpose to promote its author’s ‘professional’ image as a well-read architect, rather than by actual historical interests. Nevertheless, the volume remains a bright witness of the curiosities enlivening Fischer von Erlach’s and his patrons’ culture: the passion for travel literature and the fascination with antiquarianism, the first exoticist attractions and the growing attention to urban views and iconography, on the fence between the old prestige of erudite knowledges and the new calls of universal geography. And it is precisely in this variety of sources of inspiration that the major interest of the book lies, as well as its relevance as an evidence of the renewal of publishing genres that announced, and accompanied, the culture of the Enlightenment.
