This lecture will involve an examination of the ways in which Barocci used drawings to create his great altarpiece, the Madonna del Popolo (Uffizi). Particular attention will be paid to what the very numerous surviving drawings reveal about the artist's approach to iconography as well as more formal considerations.
David Ekserdjian has been Professor of History of Art and Film at the University of Leicester since 2004. He is the author of over two hundred publications listed on Kubikat, including monographs on Correggio (1997) and Parmigianino (2006). He has also organised or co-organised numerous exhibitions and contributed extensively to their catalogues (Mantegna, Royal Academy, London, and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1992; Treasures from Budapest, Royal Academy, London, 2010; Bronze, Royal Academy, London, 2012 and Correggio e Parmigianino: l'arte a Parma nel Cinquecento, Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome, 2016). He has served as a Trustee of the National Gallery, London (2005-13), Tate (2008-13), and of the Soane Museum (2017-). He was Slade Professor at Oxford in 2017-18.
