This presentation will focus and, in the mode of conceptual archaeology, unearth the references, internal as well as external, that inform the fragmentary nature of the highly conceptual project “The City in the City: Berlin, the Green Archipelago,” a masterplan developed by Oswald Mathias Ungers in 1979. Its numerous formal and intellectual influences resemble a trope of architectural archiving, carefully as they have been abstracted, reworked, and eventually entrained back into the project. As I will demonstrate, they are intertwined through sequential development, much like a game of cadavre exquis, and furthermore, tackle the proverbial charged void of Cold War era Berlin as three distinct kinds of excavation - a literal removal of rubble, a potentiality for the creation of an artificial island, and an analogy for design techniques that blend history with autobiography.
