Vita

Professor of Art History and holds the Kay Fortson Chair in European Art at the University of Texas in Austin. He has taught there since receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1979. Smith has written extensively about German and Netherlandish art including books on Nuremberg, German Renaissance sculpture, Jesuits, the Northern Renaissance, and late fifteenth century goldsmith work. He is currently completing a monograph on Albrecht Dürer for Phaidon Press of London. Smith served as editor of the Renaissance Quarterly (2003-06). He held fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the Zentralinstitut in 1985-86, summer 1988, 1992-93, and 2015.
