The Boundaries of German Painted Triptychs of the Fifteenth Century

This workshop will address how German painted triptychs engaged with two major boundaries intrinsic to their format: the boundaries between the divisions between scenes on the works’ interiors and those between the interior and exterior. Specific consideration will be given to the way in which Conrad von Soest and his Westphalian followers created frames between narrative scenes on the interior and then violated the boundaries they created – and in this way generated additional layers of meaning. I will also examine ways in which German triptychs (with particular attention to those in Southern Germany and Cologne) negotiated chromatic relations between their interiors and exteriors. This workshop is designed to demonstrate how attention to format, or mediality, can deepen our understanding of fifteenth-century German painting, as well as our understanding of the relation between German and Netherlandish art.
