Moving the Image of Ritual
In a context that has seen the notion of ritual increasingly reclaimed by the art world, the distinction between representing and producing new rituals becomes blurred. Moving images bring these concerns to the fore, given that ritual has long been at the heart of ethnographic film, while the very act of filming is becoming central to a growing number of social customs. I will explore these issues through the lens of Pierre Huyghe's project Streamside Day (2003), a telling limit case in which the artist scripted a celebration for a freshly built suburban town in New York State, which he simultaneously proceeded to turn into a documentary film. Making sense of such phenomena requires attending to the ways in which we process social reality through filmic registers.
