„Raymond Pettibon wurde erstmals durch seine Plattencover für die Punkband Black Flag oder Firehose bekannt, über deren von seinem Bruder Bandmitglied Greg Ginn gegründetes Plattenlabel SST er zunächst auch seine seit 1978 herausgegebenen Künstlerhefte vertreibt. 1990 gestaltete er Cover und Booklet des Albums Goo der Band Sonic Youth. « This catalogue is a facsimile edition of a 1976 Louvre catalogue. 48 images are replaced by photographs that Aëgerter took during three visits at the museum, ‚an artistic quote’. She used a tourist camera and all the pictures she made during these three days.

The well-known catalogue and the exhibited works look so familiar that it takes a while before you realize you find yourself in a cut and pasted-reality. „An Alphabetical Index of Some of the Stories is an artist’s book of photographs of dishes from a Chinese restaurant. In the images, not only the menus but also the hands of the diners were incorporated. Each dish has been recorded in the corresponding menu as if it were the synopsis of a tale told by the respective diner. Something very ordinary, choosing a dish from the menu in a restaurant, is here actually lifted to the higher level of an autobiographical story such as ‘The tale of the German bodyguard who never had to fight’ or ‘The tale of the cloud of soap’. This work is an homage to Georges Perec.

The low status of a menu is an invitation to cross borders for Aëgerter, just as the high status of an iconic work of art.“

« The images from the seminal publication Tristes Tropiques by the French cultural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss are the source of this project. These photographs of Brazilian tribes were re-enacted 80 years later in Beesterzwaag, a village in the Dutch province of Friesland. This project was realised in close collaboration with the inhabitants of Beetsterzwaag (NL). This project resulted in an artist’s books and a series of autonomous photographs.

Using this ‘counter exploration’ through space and time, the continuity of human expression and cultural exchange is emphasized. »

« Cathédrales is an artist’s book based on a spread of the cathedral in Bourges from a book published in the 1950s by the ministry of tourism to promote spiritual architecture in France. Aëgerter photographed this image over 100 times to capture the shadow of the window in her studio as it gradually covered the reproduction until the cathedral vanished into darkness.

The meditative process and the slow passing of time is incorporated in physicality of the work; the size of the publication determines the pace to turn the pages, requiring a degree of concentration that confronts the reader with their own understanding of time.

Through her interaction with existing material such as encyclopedias, documentary photographs and art reproductions, Aëgerter intervenes in the perception of her subjects and challenges traditional structures of knowledge. »

Against the background of the isolation cell of the closed department of a psychiatric clinic (Westerpoort, Bennebroek, GGZ inGeest), patients and staff pose indistinctly  in front of the camera with the plant of their choice.

Photographic Treatment © consists of a series of five books, Daily Photo Dose 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, each with thirty black and white photographic diptychs collected and edited by Laurence Aëgerter.

Conducted in collaboration with neurologists, gerontologists and psychologists, the project aims to provide an image-based therapeutic tool to improve the well-being of senile dementia patients.

While dementia can’t be cured, the ways that we care for people with the disease can be improved, and that is what Aëgerter is seeking to do with this series. Brain stimulation is especially important for individuals suffering from the adverse effects of dementia, as it has proven to be helpful in slowing down the process of brain degeneration, according to the brain plasticity principle ‘Use It or Lose It’.

It is Aëgerter’s belief that pairing images is a powerful strategy to stimulate brain activity. The process of recognising connections between two images engages specific cognitive functions, involving associative creativity and fantasy.
Photographic Treatment © also seeks to improve the well-being of individuals with dementia through the social interaction they have with their caretakers in the process of looking at the photographs and making connections.
The series is an art project, but it was also a finalist for an innovation care award in the Netherlands, confirming its integration within specialised scientific criteria accepted by experts in the field of caregiving.
