Eingebettet in das Diskursfeld der ökologischen Kunstwissenschaft sollen u.a. folgende Fragen diskutiert werden: Welche Ökologien sind durch die Materialwahl in ein Objekt eingeschrieben? Woher stammt der jeweilige Rohstoff und welche Infrastrukturen sind Abbau und Transformation inhärent? In welchem Verhältnis stehen Kunstwerke zu globalen Materialströmen und deren kolonialer Verflechtung? Wie verhalten sich öko-feministische und queere Theorien, aber auch künstlerische Positionen hierzu? Bereits bestehende materialbasierte Ansätze in der Kunstwissenschaft sollen im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe um ökokritische, (post-)kolonialistische und infrastrukturelle Fragestellungen erweitert werden.

Im Zentrum stehen historische Objekte und zeitgenössische Werke im Hinblick auf ihre ökologischen Material-, Produktions- und Transportbedingungen sowie die Erörterung geeigneter methodologischer Herangehensweisen. Diese und viele weitere Perspektiven können in Form von Texten, Kunstwerken, Ausstellungen und Vorträgen oder auch dem eigenen Promotions- bzw. Forschungsvorhaben in die Arbeitsgruppe eingebracht und zur Diskussion gestellt werden. Darüber hinaus werden gelegentlich Gäste, die an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Material und Ökologie arbeiten, eingeladen.

Art | Material | Ecology working group at the Studienzentrum zur Kunst der Moderne und Gegenwart / Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte

Art | Material | Ecology is an online working group of the Study Center for Modern and Contemporary Art at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (Central Institute for Art History) in Munich. It provides a forum to discuss and exchange ecological perspectives on materials in the visual arts and architecture.

Embedded in the discursive field of ecological art studies, the working group focuses on questions of materials: what are the ecologies that are inscribed in an object through the choice of materials? Where does the raw material come from and what infrastructures are associated with its extraction and processing? What is the relationship between artworks and global material flows in terms of their colonial entanglements? How do ecofeminist, queer theories and artistic positions relate to this? Discussions within the working group will expand material-based approaches in art history to include ecocritical, (post-)colonialist, and infrastructural issues.

The focus will be on historical objects and contemporary works in terms of their ecological material, production, and transportation conditions and the discussion of appropriate methodological approaches. These and many other perspectives can be brought to the working group and discussed in texts, artworks, exhibitions, and lectures. Participants may also present their own doctoral or research projects. In addition, guests working at the intersection of art, materials, and ecology are occasionally invited to join the discussion.
