Developments in computer programming such as ‘machine learning’ have resulted in a digital technology that is not anymore just managing information but also processing language and interpreting images – and as such has started to identify meaning. This talk will explore to what extend this has shifted the faultlines and relations between the fields of culture and technology using research from the Creative AI Lab, a collaboration of the Serpentine Gallery with King’s College London.

This research looks at examples that playfully explore that by entering the field of meaning, i.e. analysing images and language correctly, contemporary Artificial Intelligence seems to intrude into a field traditionally assigned to culture: the making of meaning. The talk looks at examples of machine learning and its calculation of meaning and will make a plea for art and culture to play a prominent role in our future with this technology. Artistic creativity is important to critically and curiously explore and open up the functioning of this technology, and in translating Artificial Intelligence to a general public.
