In the Latin West, measures of bodies and body parts played significant roles in medieval devotional practices, at least from the thirteenth century onwards. Measures of the bodies of Christ, of the saints, and of the devotees themselves materialized in iconographic as well as aniconic forms across several media. This paper presents some intriguing cases of devotional measures from medieval Scandinavia, discussing their rhetorical potential and the ways in which they could provoke devotional action and manifest authority.
Kristin B. Aavitsland is an art historian and medievalist, Professor of Medieval Studies at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society (Oslo) and presently Director of The Norwegian Institute in Rome. Graduated from the University of Oslo (2002), she has had visiting fellowships at Warburg Institute (London) and Copenhagen University. Her research centers on visual rhetoric, material religion, and liturgical and devotional art in twelfth-century Scandinavia and thirteenth-century Rome.
