Between the fifth and fifteenth centuries, over one hundred reconstructions of the tomb of Christ were built throughout Europe. Long understood by scholars as architectural copies of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, my presentation will instead highlight local artistic, theological, performative, and historical contexts in order to reconsider the purposes and meanings of these sites, with a particular focus on the Holy Sepulcher in Gernrode, Germany.
