This workshop addresses the “artistic” turn of puppet theatre in Japan and Germany at the beginning of the 20th Century and argues that active appreciation of this medium of expression and new approaches to puppetry by visual artists led to the development of new forms of puppetry rather than the passive evaluations offered by theatre critics like Bernard Shaw and Edward Gordon Craig. It will focus especially on the “Marionetten-Theater Münchner Künstler," which played an important role not only in Germany but also in Japan.
