Photo campaigns are more or less well-organised undertakings with a specific purpose, commissioned by a person or institution in a specific context and by employing specific technologies. Moreover, photo campaigns are linked to the idea of a systematic approach, in our case to art-historical documentation. However, it sometimes happens that things go in a different direction or that the meaning of a photo campaign changes depending on space and time. Photographic archives too are created by somebody, with a purpose, in a social and cultural context and in a specific moment in history – and also there, sometimes something goes in an unexpected direction. The figure of the photographic campaign can be useful for a better understanding of the photographic archive as the ecosystem in which the photographs created will finally operate. In my paper I will reflect about the archive as a photo campaign focusing on material from the Photothek of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz.

Dr. Costanza Caraffa (PhD Berlin 2003) has been Head of the Photothek at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max-Planck-Institut (KHI) since 2006. In 2009 she initiated the Photo Archives conference series dedicated to the interaction between photographic archives, photography and academic disciplines, with conferences in London (2009), Florence (2009, 2011, 2019), New York (2011), Los Angeles (2016), Oxford (2017), Basel (2022) (next planned meeting: Chicago). In 2009 she authored the Florence Declaration for the Preservation of Analogue Photo Archives. Between 2015 and 2018 she was coordinator of the collaborative project Photo-Objects – Photographs as (Research) Objects in Archaeology, Ethnology and Art History and co-curated the exhibition “Unboxing Photographs” (Berlin 2018).

Among her edited or co-edited publications are: Photo Archives and the Photographic Memory of Art History (2011); Photo Archives and the Idea of Nation (2015, with T. Serena); Photo-Objects. On the Materiality of Photographs and Photo Archives in the Humanities and Sciences (2019) and Foto-Objekte. Forschen in archäologischen, ethnologischen und kunsthistorischen Archiven (2020, both with J. Bärnighausen, S. Klamm, F. Schneider and P. Wodtke); On Alinari. Archive in Transition (2021) with artist Armin Linke; Encounters in an Archive. Objects of Migration / Photo-Objects of Art History (2023, with A. Goldhahn) featuring artist Massimo Ricciardo.
