„R.in M.“ Die Erforschung einer verlorenen Kunstsammlung / Researching Jacques & Emma Rosenthal‘s lost art collection
Colloquium XV of the series "Provenienz- und Sammlungsforschung" is devoted to the research project - funded from 2020 to 2025 by the German Lost Art Foundation - that investigated the private art collection of Jacques and Emma Rosenthal. In 1914, on the occasion of Jacques' 60th birthday, son Erwin presented his parents the privately printed catalogue "Pictures and Globes Owned by Jacques Rosenthal". Six copies of the catalogue are currently known to exist world-wide: in the family's possession, in the RKD, the Yale University Library, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Warburg Institute in London. The project reconstructed scope and character of the collection, its dispersal after 1933 and, to the degree possible, the current whereabouts of the objects that had been dispossessed or sold under duress due to Nazi persecution. The colloquium - like the project - is carried out in cooperation with the descendants of the Rosenthal family, and serves as a platform or meeting point of researchers and family, sharing recollections and results, experiences and insights.
