This lecture will present the history of an innovative project launched in the 1960s by Marie-Madeleine Gauthier, as well as its findings, which highlight the extraordinary spread of this production throughout the medieval West. Drawing on ongoing research, notably the publication in the AGORHA database of crosses preserved in Germany and the digitisation of some of MMG’s records, we shall consider the future of long-term research projects.
Élisabeth Antoine-König, a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, is Senior Curator in the département des Objets d’art (musée du Louvre), where she has been responsible for the Gothic art collections since 2005. She previously served as a curator for ten years at the Musée de Cluny (musée national du Moten Âge), where she created the medieval-inspired garden opened (2000) and organised the exhibition Sur la terre comme au ciel. Jardins d’Occident à la fin du Moyen Âge (2002), before serving as scientific adviser for medieval art at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (2004–2005).
She has contributed to numerous exhibitions and curated the exhibitions Le Trésor de l’abbaye de Saint-Maurice d’Agaune (2014) and Figures du fou. Du Moyen Âge aux Romantiques (2024–2025) at the Louvre. She teaches regularly at the École du Louvre and the Institut national du patrimoine. A specialist in the precious arts of the Gothic period, she is continuing to author the Corpus des émaux méridionaux and is currently preparing the catalogue of Gothic gold and silverwork held in the département des Objets d’art, whilst maintaining her interest in the perception of nature in the Middle Ages, as reflected in gardens, menageries and aviaries.
