Wojciech Bałus // In Search for the Principles of Art History: The Idea of Kunstwissenschaft from August Schmarsow to Erwin Panofsky and Paul Frankl

At the beginning of the twentieth century the history of art did begin to build its theoretical foundations. The concepts of August Schmarsow, Alois Riegl, Heinrich Wölfflin, Paul Frankl, Erwin Panofsky, Hans Sedlmayr as well as Wilhelm Worringer, Fritz Burger, partly Aby Warburg, Johannes Jahn and others are well known, but so far they have been considered and analysed rather as separate phenomena or, at best, as elements of a certain school (as for example the Vienna school of art history), or still, by identifying similarities and differences between particular scholars. The problem has not been given a comprehensive treatment until now, and it is the aim of the present project to draw up such a synthesis. What is meant here is, obviously, not to merely assemble in one place what has been already known, but to undertake a critical and analytical consideration of the approaches to art history, which had emerged during approximately the first forty years of the twentieth century.
