Romanesque sculpture in Bavaria seldom conforms to the formal and iconographic standards set elsewhere on the continent, resulting in an unfair devaluation of its underlying sophistication. As part of a wider project on the role of art in twelfth-century Bavarian colonization, this talk contextualizes the famed Freising Bestiensäule in its intellectual and theological milieu to suggest it be seen as a studied commentary on human ontological boundaries. The violent intermixing of human and beastly bodies visualizes the messy business of defining in and out in a medieval anthropology built on continuity.
