Online | Panofsky Lecture 2021 // Charlotte Guichard: Colonial Watteau - Picturing Visions of Empire in Regency France
What were the early visions of Empire in Regency France? From the Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera (1717) by Jean-Antoine Watteau, exhibited at the time of French colonial expansion in Louisiana, to images that circulated around 1720 and after, this lecture will propose to reconsider the gallant aesthetics of travel, embarkation and commerce as visual resources picturing the first stages of French colonial policy in North America.
