Netherlandish Cosmopolitan: the Antwerp art market and foreign merchant communities 1500-1576
From Albrecht Dürer to Ludovico Guicciardini, sixteenth-century travelers recognized the reciprocity of Antwerp's international transit trade and art markets. While foreign merchants commissioned artworks for personal use and export, strengthening their position within the 'localized' commercial network, Antwerp artists adapted Netherlandish visual traditions for foreign consumers, developing a self-consciously 'transnational' brand. This introductory overview of my dissertation research will highlight the dynamic artistic and material culture of Antwerp, which registered and even constituted the international extensions of the city.
